The Blind Men and the Elephant

According to Wikipedia, the story of the blind men and an elephant originated in India. In various versions of the tale, a group of blind men (or men in the dark) touch an elephant to learn what it is like. Each one touches a different part, but only one part, such as the side or the tusk. They then compare notes on what they felt, and learn they are in complete disagreement. The story is used to indicate that reality may be viewed differently depending upon one's perspective, suggesting that what seems an absolute truth may be relative due to the deceptive nature of half-truths.

Here’s the story…

Once upon a time there were three blind men who did not know what an elephant was like. They were always asking people to tell them about elephants when they met each other they were always talking about elephants and telling each other what they knew.

They very much wanted to see an elephant. Of course to feel an elephant, because a blind man “sees” with his hands.

One day, a man came along and said: “who wants to see an elephant? There is one in the next road, and it is tame, you can all come and feel it if you want to know yourself.”

The three blind men were happy and went along very quickly until they came to the elephant. Then all three together went, forward stretching out their hands to feel what an elephant was like!

The first one touched its ear. The ear was a great wide soft thing. The second one touched its leg. He put both his arms round it and held it. It was very strong, thick and hard. The third touched its tail. He took the tail in his hand and shook it. It was long and straight, thin and hard.

Afterwards they sat down together to talk about the elephant.

The first one said: “I never tought it was like that it is so soft and wide and big, like a banana leaf.” The second said: “what? An elephant is like a banana leaf!?” of course is not. You are stupid. Is is strong and thick, straight and hard. It is like a tree. Yes. It is just like a tree.” And the third one loughed: “I never heard such stupid thing before. An elephant is not all like that. It is thin and long. It is just like a snake. That it what its like.
